Catherine Phang was born in Madison, Wisconsin (b.1991) but grew up in Seoul, Korea. She is an active composer, artistic collaborator and music educator based in New York City.

As a co-founder and executive administrator for Sforzando Composers Collective, she has been producing six multidisciplinary concerts at galleries and concert venues around New York City, collaborating with Dancers, Visual artists, and ensembles.

Catherine has written for various combination of orchestra, chamber orchestra, chamber ensemble, choir and also electro-acoustic music. Her compositions have been performed at the concerts by New Asia Chamber Music Society, Either/or Ensemble and Sforzando Composers Collective.

Catherine completed her Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition at University of Hartford-the Hartt School in West Hartford, Connecticut where she studied composition with Larry Alan Smith and Ken Steen, and piano with David Westfall and Paul Rutman. She recently graduated from Manhattan School of Music with her Master’s defree in Classical Music Composition where she studied with Richard Danielpour and Reiko Fueting.

Apart from composition, Catherine is currently working as a private piano teacher and salesperson at Absolute Piano.
